Severe flooding and landslides have occurred on the China-Nepal border. The natural disaster caused significant destruction near the Gyirong (Jilong) border crossing.

According to the latest information, 558 people are missing, TodayPress TV reports.

Of them, 260 are reportedly foreign nationals. According to preliminary information, three people have died. However, the exact number of fatalities is still being determined.

Following torrential rains, water levels rose sharply. Dozens of buildings, bridges and vehicles were submerged by floodwaters. Mobile communications were also reportedly disrupted at the scene.

Local authorities have described the incident as “unprecedented”. Experts are investigating the causes of the flooding and are also considering the possibility of a glacial lake outburst.
