Expected FIFA showdown will not happen: Čeferin withdraws

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has said he does not intend to run in the 2027 FIFA presidential election or challenge the organization’s current president, Gianni Infantino, TodayPress TV reports, citing The Guardian.

Čeferin said he has no interest in the FIFA presidency. According to the UEFA president, he highly values his current position and believes that his reputation and the trust placed in him would be greater if he did not seek the FIFA presidency.

The FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place in Morocco in March 2027. Čeferin has led UEFA since September 2016 and has been re-elected to the position twice. He is also a FIFA vice president.

It should be noted that Gianni Infantino’s initiative to establish a company called FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would oversee FIFA’s major tournaments, has previously faced serious criticism. According to FIFA estimates, the project could generate approximately $4.2 billion in revenue for the organization and increase the revenues of member associations.

However, UEFA, CONCACAF, AFC and CONMEBOL have refused to support the initiative. UEFA also announced that it intended to boycott FIFA tournaments until the idea was officially abandoned.
