A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded in Lake Baikal, located in Russia’s Republic of Buryatia.

TodayPress TV reports that the Russian Academy of Sciences provided the information.

According to the report, the tremors occurred at 10:18 local time. The epicenter was located 17 kilometers from the village of Maksimikha.

The tremors were felt most strongly in Maksimikha, where the earthquake intensity reached 5 points. In the village of Ust-Barguzin, the intensity was 4 points.

The earthquake was also felt in several other settlements, including Gremyachinsk, Turka and Goryachinsk. Residents of other areas of Buryatia and Irkutsk Region also reportedly felt the tremors.

Lake Baikal is located in the center of the seismically active Baikal Rift Zone. Experts say earthquakes occur regularly in the area due to the movement of tectonic plates.
